Ways to Conserve Soil
1. To prevent the erosion of soil, we should
plant more number of trees. The roots of
the trees bind the soil thus, do not allow
its erosion.
2. Prevent overgrazing by cattle. The
cattle should be sent to different areas
to graze so that the plants and grasses
Trees Prevent Soil Erosion get time to grow back in the areas that
have been grazed already.
The practice of growing different crops
in successive seasons is called crop
rotation. This helps in maintaining soil
quality as different crops have different
nutrient requirement.
3. Building embankments along the river
Overgrazing by Cattle banks to prevent the overflowing water
during floods is an effective method of
soil conservation. The flood water tends
to carry away the topsoil leading to soil
erosion.
4. Hilly areas are prone to losing the
fertile topsoil when rain water flows down
the slopes. Building terraces or contours for
farming helps to reduce the speed of flowing
Crop Rotation water and thus prevents loss of fertile soil.

LET’S
REVISE
• Soil is a very important natural resource.
• Formation of soil is a slow process as it takes hundreds of years to form just 1cm
thick layer of soil.
