What is Environment?
All the things that surround us make up
our environment. Environment is very
important for the survival of all living
things.
Both living and non-living things are
parts of our environment. All living things
whether they are human beings, plants or
animals, depend on non-living things for
their survival. Our surroundings give us
air to breathe and water to drink. Our Environment
Plants and animals give us food to eat. Raw materials like stones, soil, sand, etc., are
required for building our homes and the material comes from the earth.
P ollution
The presence of harmful substances in our environment is called pollution. Pollution
makes our environment dirty and unhealthy.
The harmful substances that make our environment dirty and cause pollution are called
pollutants. Pollution causes harmful effects on all living things in our environment.
Air Pollution
The presence of smoke, dust particles and
various other harmful gases like carbon
dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide,
etc., in air causes air pollution. There
are a lot of impurities in the city air. In
cities, smoke from vehicles, industries and
burning substances is the main reason of
air pollution. In rural areas, people use
firewood and coal for cooking. The smoke
that comes out from these sources cause air
pollution. Bursting firecrackers on various
occasions give out smoke which is also a
reason of air pollution.
When there are storms or strong winds,
dust particles are added to the air making Air Pollution
