The sun is the centre of the solar system. The eight planets in the right order are Mercury,
Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They revolve around the sun
in fixed paths called orbits.
All the heavenly bodies have distinct characteristics.
• Sun is the largest object in the solar system.
• Mercury is the smallest and the closest to the sun. It is the smallest planet in the
solar system.
• Venus is the brightest and very hot planet. It is the second planet from the sun. It is
also called morning and evening star.
• Earth is the only planet on which life exists. It is also called the blue planet.
• Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is known as the red planet.
• Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is the largest planet with the maximum
number of moons. It is more than twice as huge as all the other planets combined.
• Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. It is called as ringed planet because it has
rings around it.
• Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun. It is the coldest planet.
• Neptune is the eight and farthest planet from the sun.
