In this chapter, we will study the need to take care of actions in our day to day life, how
to avoid fire accidents and the safety measures and first aid to be given for animal bites,
burns, nose bleed, etc.
S afety–Fire
Fire accidents are caused due to cooking gas, electricity, fire crackers, petrol, etc. There
may be several reasons:
Factual Study
1. One of the major causes for fire accidents is The National Fire Protection
careless handling of candles, matchsticks, Association (NFPA) has suggested
etc., especially in kitchen. to remember the word PASS while
operating a fire extinguisher.
2. Gas leakage is another major cause.
• Pull the pin. Release the lock with
3. Old electric sockets and plugs can result in the nozzle pointing away from you.
sparking. • Aim low. Point the extinguisher at
the base of the fire.
4. Wearing nylon clothes can cause fire easily • Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
as nylon is a good conductor of heat. • Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
Prevention of Fire Hazards
1. If there is a gas leakage, open the
doors and windows. Do not switch
any electrical appliances during gas
leakage as that may cause fire. Do not
light any matchstick.
2. Kerosene stove should not be placed on the floor. It can get knocked over, spilling the
kerosene and causing a major fire.
3. Combustible substances like kerosene, petrol and oil, should not be kept near cooking
gas stove.
