A daptations
The special features which develop in an animal to help it to survive in its habitat are
known as adaptation. Some of the adaptations shown by animals are as follows.
Body Covering
Different animals have different body coverings which help them to survive in their
environment. These may be shell, fur, scales or feathers.
1. Fur: The body of sheep, bear and yak is covered with fur (wool) that protects them
from cold climate.

2. Scales: The reptiles, i.e., lizards,
crocodiles and snakes have scales on
their bodies. This helps to prevent
water loss from their body. Over a Scales
period of time, some reptiles like the Snake
snakes shed their skin. The process of
shedding of old skin to replace it with
new skin is called moulting. Fish are
