Think Hard
If you have a kitchen garden at home, what will you use – chemical fertilizers or manure – to
enrich the soil fertility? Justify your answer.
Project Work
Break an egg carefully to preserve the egg shell and write on it ‘root power’ with a marker. Place
a teaspoonful of soil in the egg shell. Then place some germinated seeds in the soil.
Place the egg shell in a warm place and keep the soil moist. In less than a week, the roots will
come out through the egg shell.
Life Skills Activity
Germinate gram seeds and castor bean seeds. Note the difference in their mode of germination.
Research and Development
Take a potato. You can see eyes on it. They are the buds. Cut the potato into small pieces such
that some pieces contain a bud and some do not. Spread some cotton on a tray and moisten it.
Place the potato pieces on the cotton.
Note where the pieces with buds are placed. Observe the changes taking place in these potato
pieces over the next two days. Make sure that the cotton is kept moist. Which are the potato
pieces that give rise to fresh shoots? What do you conclude from this activity?
Field Trip
Plan a visit to the school garden and speak to the gardener. Find out how soil is prepared for
pots in the school.
