3. What is a wedge? Give examples.
4. What is a screw? Why is it called the modification of an inclined plane?
Think Hard
Apply force to move a heavy load. What do you observe? You will find that you
cannot move the load. Why?
Now put some wheels under the same load and apply the same amount of force on
it. What do you observe? Can you move the load now? If yes, what is the reason?
Project Work
1. With the help of a wooden reel, make a pulley system. Observe the working of the system.
2. Make a model of a screw.
Take a paper and cut it in the form of a right-angled triangle. One of its sides will represent an
inclined plane (take the side, other than hypotenuse), colour this edge. Now wrap this paper
around a pencil. Your model of a screw is ready.
Life Skills Activity
1. Observe your bicycle. Try to identify the types of simple machines it has and write in your
notebook.
2. Make a list of all the simple machines your mother uses in the kitchen and classify them.
Research and Development
What is a voltaic battery?
Voltaic batteries come in all shapes and sizes. Turning chemical energy into electrical energy,
we need to power our cell phones, iPods, tablets, cars… you name it! These batteries seem
complicated, but you can make a real voltaic battery right at home! Grab some vinegar, nails,
copper wire, and an ice tray…
Research and complete the project.
