LET’S
REVISE
• All the things surrounding us make our environment.
• Air pollution is caused by smoke coming out from vehicles, industries and bursting
firecrackers, and burning coal and firewood.
• Air pollution is harmful for our environment and health.
• Disposal of waste from factories and sewage pipelines causes water pollution.
• Polluted water causes diseases like diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid.
• Honking vehicles, loud speakers and machines cause noise pollution.
• Dumping wastes from factories, overuse of chemicals and deforestation are major causes of
land pollution.
• Deforestation causes soil erosion.
• Plant more trees to reduce air and land pollution.
• Proper treatment of waste from industries can reduce water and land pollution.
• We should use cloth bags and paper bags instead of polythene bag.
Glossary
• Environment : Things that surround us.
• Pollution : The presence of harmful substances in our environment.
• Pollutants : The harmful substances that make our environment dirty and
cause pollution.
• Greenhouse effect : When harmful gases like carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons and
methane trap solar energy and do not allow it to escape from the
atmosphere.
• Global warming : The addition of carbon dioxide gas in air because of air pollution,
has increased the temperature of the earth.
• Water pollution : The addition of harmful substances in water which makes water
unfit for drinking.
• Noise pollution : The unpleasant and loud sounds which cause irritation and
discomfort to our ears.
• Land pollution : The destruction of land due to its misuse.
• Soil erosion : By cutting down trees, soil becomes loose and can be easily carried
away by the blowing wind and rainwater.
